The library catalog has an extra search tool with links to safe websites. You can search WebPath Express directly by clicking on the WebPath Express link in the Destiny Classic menu and typing your keyword(s) into the search box just as you would to search the catalog.
If you are searching in Destiny Classic you can also see websites with informaton about your topic by typing your search term into the search box and clicking either keyword or subject. Once you have the results for items in the catalog, click on Websites to see results from safe sites on the internet.
You can refine your search by using limiters such as grade level, format or source. Lexiles are reading levels that range from easier to read (200) to more difficult. Set your grade level first to ensure that the lexile is not too hard. Once you have set your limiters, click on Get Results.
Searching will be easier if you think about your search terms before you begin, so make a list of keywords, concepts or subjects that you want to search for.
Try searching for 'dogs' by clicking on Keyword. Try a second search for 'dogs' by clicking on Subject in Destiny Classic.
What do you notice? What is the difference between the two searches? You probably noticed that there were lots of resources when you searched by subject and even more when you searched by keyword.
Look at some of the titles in the list again. Maybe you just want to know more about guide dogs or a specific breed like poodles. Now try refining or narrowing your search using those new terms for both a keyword and a subject search. What do you notice now?
You may also have noticed the message asking you whether this is what you are looking for. The system is reminding you to think about how to improve your search!
There are different ways to refine or narrow your search in order to find exactly the right resources for your project. Did you notice the different symbols next to the books about guide dogs? The first title is a book, but the second is an electronic or eBook.
Perhaps you would prefer to read electronic books (eBooks) about dogs. Choose eBooks from the dropdown menu of Material Type. Remember, you must be logged in to the catalog to read eBooks.
You can also narrow or refine your search by reading level (if you happen to know it) or interest level. For example, you may be looking for eBooks about guide dogs that might be interesting for students in grades 2-4. To clear all limiters in order to start a new search, just click on Reset All.
The picture below shows how WebPath Express results look when you search using Destiny Discover. Type your keyword into the search box, click on Search and choose Websites from the top tabs. Use the Filters from the menu on the lefhand side of the page to narrow or refine your search.
