The sun has been shining upon us and the holiday is on its way!

And that means more time to read... on beaches, in hammocks, in gardens, quietly by ourselves or raucously with friends.

I have my pile of books picked out and ready to go and I can't wait to get started on them. Below you will find some great summer reading titles recommended by our librarians. If you are looking for even more summer reading recommendations, you can find them on our  Summer Reading Lib Guide page, where you fill find Summer Reading Suggestions listed by grade level suitability.

 Great Books to Read Aloud.

We Are Water Protectors: One young water protector takes a stand to defend Earth's most sacred resource.

Jabari Jumps: A sweet tale of overcoming your fears, Gaia Cornwall captures a moment between a patient and encouraging father and a determined little boy.

The Interrupting Chicken: It’s time for the little red chicken’s bedtime story  - and a reminder from Papa to try not to interrupt. But the chicken can’t help herself!

Beginner Chapter Book Series and Graphic Novels: the perfect preparation for the Grade 2 Writer's Workshop.

The One and Only Ivan: Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all. Bob, a stray dog and beloved friend of Ivan, gets his own tale in the sequel.

Are you ready to protect the creatures of myth and legend? Then you belong in The Unicorn Rescue Society. Hurry, the creatures need you!

Ever since the monster apocalypse hit town, Jack Sullivan (one of The Last Kids on Earth) has been living in his tree house, armed to the teeth with catapults and an endless supply of Oreos and Mountain Dew scavenged from abandoned stores.

Septimus Heap: For fans of Harry Potter style magic and mystery, this enthralling series leads readers on a fantastic journey filled with quirky characters, clever charms, potions and spells.

The Wild Robot: From bestselling and award-winning author and illustrator Peter Brown comes a heart warming, action-packed novel about what happens when nature and technology collide.

Orphan, clock keeper, and thief, Hugo Cabret lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station, where his survival depends on secrets and anonymity. But when his world suddenly interlocks with an eccentric, bookish girl and a bitter old man who runs a toy booth in the station, Hugo's undercover life, and his most precious secret, are put in jeopardy.

Reading the Ranger's Apprentice series is an epic undertaking best begun in Grade 5:  Will, an orphan who becomes an apprentice to the mysterious protectors known as Rangers, strives to keep the Kingdom of Araluen safe from invaders, traitors and other threats in this brilliant series for action and adventure lovers. With 12 titles in the first series and no less than three spin off series sagas - this challenge will easily fill a whole summer!

Ghost (The Track Series) by Jason Reynolds: Castle Crenshaw goes by the name Ghost, because he's a wicked fast runner. The first time he ran - truly ran - he was running for his life. Running is something he never had to practice. It's just something he knew how to do"Trouble is, you can't run away from yourself." Coach snatched the towel from his shoulder, folded it into a perfect square, and set it in the space between us. "Unfortunately," he said, "ain't nobody that fast."

The Last Wild Trilogy: This is a story about a boy named Kester. He is extraordinary, but he doesn't know that yet. All he knows, at this very moment, is this:

1. There is a flock of excited pigeons in his bedroom. 2. They are talking to him. 3. His life will never be quite the same again.

The War That Saved My Life and The War I finally Won: This pair of wonderful historical fiction novels tell an exceptionally moving story of triumph against all odds, set during World War 2, from the acclaimed author of Jefferson’s Sons and for fans of Number the Stars.
